A Bombing, Illegal Surveillance Against us, and my Gratitude 🙏🌷

{You can open each page by clicking on it, and close it by clicking "X"}.

International solidarity with Palestine and global Direct Action activists are still assessing the new situation since Israel bombed the solidarity ship to Gaza named "Conscience", just off the shores of Malta a few days ago. It's no wonder that some prefer to refer to the aggressor here as "Israhell".

The bombing and its surrounding events are closely related to our organization, Cyprus IndyMedia, and to me personally, by way of complicated history of illegal surveillance against us hidden in the shadows. Until recently.

A short summary of the recent events and more details [1]:
■ Why was a Gaza-bound aid ship attacked near Malta?
https://timesofmalta.com/article/why-gazabound-aid-ship-attacked-near-malta.1109225

Video of the drone bombing attack here [2]:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHotRDIwWws

As you can tell, the news item was suppressed, or "under-reported", so you would not read or hear about it unless you were already informed and engaged in deliberate search for it.

Fortunately no one was killed in this attack. But the bombing is indicative of the attitude that Prime Minister Satanyahu has imposed on all efforts to help the Palestinian people: just like in the year 2010, when Israel illegally raided the unarmed Gaza Freedom Flotilla, killing ten people and wounding thirty - all of them on the solidarity ship "Mavi Marmara" - arresting about 600 people and seizing the six ships comprising the Flotilla.

Satanyahu's message is his willingness to bomb and kill any international activists attempting to bring food or medicine to Gaza.

The current situation is a lot more dangerous than it was in 2010 because Israel is now wholly engaged and committed to full-scale slaughter, extermination of the innocents, mayhem and genocide while THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING.

There are more parallels to the 2010 story but I will only mention one here:
The Government of Cyprus, which at the time was in the hands of a "progressive", fake-leftist party named AKEL and President Christofias ENABLED the slaughter by cracking down on our Palestine solidarity networks that were based in the free part of Cyprus. Cyprus security forces physically chased away the Flotilla, forcing it to seek support from the Turkish Government in the illegally occupied part of Cyprus - Turkey had already completed an invasion, occupation, and ETHNIC CLEANSING of Cyprus, the same kind of ethnic cleansing that Satanyahu's Israel is attempting to carry out in Gaza:
■ "This is the Cyprus Police Helicopter..."
https://cyprusindymedia.blogspot.com/2010/05/this-is-cyprus-police-helicopter.html

Malta now seems to be involved in some similar game, oscillating between "supporting" and repulsing the solidarity Ship to Gaza, dissembling and prevaricating as its Government attempts to conceal a possible collaboration with the zionist forces (US and Israel) acting together on a global scale.

The events leading up to the slaughter of the international solidarity activists in 2010 included a tremendous amount of espionage, illegal surveillance, sabotage, and co-ordination by the US /State Department /CIA and Israhell /Mossad /Shin Bet security services, with some tiny "players" like the fake-leftist Government of Cyprus during that period.

Our activist networks for the Ships to Gaza /Fleet to Gaza /Free Gaza flotilla solidarity campaigns during the mid-to-late 2000s were all targeted with extensive surveillance by the dark forces named above. And...

My gratitude 🌷

I would like to extend deep, profound, sincere and heartfelt GRATITUDE to some of our comrades and allies in the US whose work in this process is almost unknown in our parts of the Muddled East and the Mediterranean. I'm referring specifically to the volunteers, staff, and supporters of the US-based Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR), who, immediately after the 2010 slaughter on the ship Mavi Marmara and the total disruption of the Flotilla launched a head-on confrontation with the US Government for its role in the slaughter.

CCR took the US to Court, and at the end of a legal and administrative battle that lasted for about nine years, was able to uncover some of the most extensive and devious, disgusting aspects of the operations against us... proving once again that without active military, financial, political and intelligence support from US imperialism Israel would not be able to carry out any of its atrocities. And without that support it would probably collapse in a day.

CCR's legal victory forced the US Government to release THOUSANDS of pages of its surveillance documents.

Among them there was clear evidence that my emails came under surveillance.
TWO FULL YEARS BEFORE the lethal attack against the Free Gaza flotilla.

My name, along with that of many other friends and comrades in the Free Gaza solidarity networks who took risks to carry on projects, is featured in some of the espionage documents.

The fact that the spy agencies felt comfortable to release my name without drawing a black line over it to "redact" this act of surveillance, implies that targeting me is only an insignificant tiny tip of the iceberg. Targeting Cyprus branch of the global network of independent journalism, IndyMedia, is more serious. Fortunately our other Editorial Collective members, supporters, and friends of Cyprus IndyMedia were not named individually.

The pages we reproduce here are only four out of the THOUSANDS of pages produced by the illegal surveillance operations targeting our networks. We provide the links below so that you can study all of the if you like on the CCR website.

Some of the people involved in this particular chapter of espionage who mentioned in the papers:
o- John Carlino, was a "diplomat", serving in Cyprus as a Section Sead in the Consular section of the US Embassy.
o- Shawn Sherlock was a Diplomatic Security Special Agent.
o- Gregory Makris was Head of the Political Section at the U.S. Embassy, Cyprus [4].
o- Nick Nicoletopoulos, Security Coordinator at the U.S. Embassy, Cyprus [5].

The email from me that was intercepted by the spies mentions the specific death threats we were all receiving at the time, the acts of sabotage, the threats for a BOMBING.

We reproduce here those four pages generated by that particular illegal surveillance operation. If you prefer to read them directly on the CCR website, you can find my name and Cyprus IndyMedia mentioned towards the end of this particular packet of documents, along with a letter from me that is reproduced by the spies in its entirety, at this address (you may need to use the "Find" function of your browser):

Palestinian Refugees Deserve to Return Home. Jews Should Understand.

Palestinians from Gaza leaving the occupied West Bank to go to Jordan in 1968.

Mr. Beinart, a contributing Opinion writer who focuses on politics and foreign policy, is an editor at large of Jewish Currents, where a version of this essay appeared.

Why has the impending eviction of six Palestinian families in East Jerusalem drawn Israelis and Palestinians into a conflict that appears to be spiraling toward yet another war? Because of a word that in the American Jewish community remains largely taboo: the Nakba.

The Nakba, or “catastrophe” in Arabic, need not refer only to the more than 700,000 Palestinians who were expelled or fled in terror during Israel’s founding. It can also evoke the many expulsions that have occurred since: the about 300,000 Palestinians whom Israel displaced when it conquered the West Bank and Gaza Strip in 1967; the roughly 250,000 Palestinians who could not return to the West Bank and Gaza after Israel revoked their residency rights between 1967 and 1994; the hundreds of Palestinians whose homes Israel demolished in 2020 alone. The East Jerusalem evictions are so combustible because they continue a pattern of expulsion that is as old as Israel itself.

Among Palestinians, Nakba is a household word. But for Jews — even many liberal Jews in Israel, America and around the world — the Nakba is hard to discuss because it is inextricably bound up with Israel’s creation. Without the mass expulsion of Palestinians in 1948, Zionist leaders would have had neither the land nor the large Jewish majority necessary to create a viable Jewish state. As I discuss at greater length in an essay for Jewish Currents from which this guest essay is adapted, acknowledging and beginning to remedy that expulsion — by allowing Palestinian refugees to return — requires imagining a different kind of country, where Palestinians are considered equal citizens, not a demographic threat.

To avoid this reckoning, the Israeli government and its American Jewish allies insist that Palestinian refugees abandon hope of returning to their homeland. This demand is drenched in irony, because no people in human history have clung as stubbornly to the dream of return as have Jews. Establishment Jewish leaders denounce the fact that Palestinians pass down their identity as refugees to their children and grandchildren. But Jews have passed down our identity as refugees for 2,000 years. In our holidays and liturgy we continually mourn our expulsion and express our yearning for return. “After being forcibly exiled from their land,” proclaims Israel’s Declaration of Independence, “the people kept faith with it throughout their Dispersion.” If keeping faith that exile can be overcome is sacred to Jews, how can we condemn Palestinians for doing the same thing?

In addition to telling Palestinians they cannot go home because they have been away too long, Jewish leaders argue that return is impractical. But this too is deeply ironic because, as a refugee rights advocate, Lubnah Shomali, has pointed out, “If any state is an expert in receiving masses and masses of people and settling them in a very small territory, it’s Israel.” At the height of the Soviet exodus in the early 1990s, Israel took in about 500,000 immigrants. If millions of diaspora Jews began moving to Israel tomorrow, Jewish leaders would not say taking them in was logistically impossible. They would help Israel to do what it has done before: build large amounts of housing fast.

When most Jews imagine Palestinian refugees’ return, they probably don’t envision it looking like Israel’s absorption of Soviet Jews. More likely, they predict Palestinians expelling Jews from their homes. But the tragic reality is that not many Jews live in former Palestinian homes, since it is believed that only a few thousand remain intact. Ms. Shomali estimates that more than 70 percent of Palestinian villages that were destroyed in 1948 remain vacant. And the Palestinian activists and scholars who envision return generally argue that large-scale eviction is neither necessary, nor desirable. Asked in 2000 about Jews living in formerly Palestinian homes, the famed Palestinian literary critic Edward Said declared that he was “averse to the notion of people leaving their homes” and that “some humane and moderate solution should be found where the claims of the present and the claims of the past are addressed.”

None of this means refugee return would be simple or uncontested. Efforts at historical justice rarely are. But there is a reason the writer Ta-Nehisi Coates ends his famous essay on reparations for segregation and slavery with the subprime mortgage crisis that forced many Black Americans into foreclosure in the first decade of the 21st century. The crimes of the past, when left unaddressed, do not remain in the past. That’s also the lesson of the evictions that have set Israel-Palestine aflame. More than seven decades ago, Palestinians were expelled to create a Jewish state. Now they are being expelled to make Jerusalem a Jewish city. By refusing to face the Nakba of 1948, the Israeli government and its American Jewish allies ensure that the Nakba continues.

Perhaps American Jewish leaders fear that facing the crimes committed at Israel’s birth will leave Jews vulnerable. Once the Nakba taboo is lifted, Palestinians will feel emboldened to seek revenge. But more often than not, honestly confronting the past has the opposite effect.

After George Bisharat, a Palestinian-American law professor, wrote about the house in Jerusalem that his grandfather had built and been robbed of, a former Israeli soldier who had lived in it contacted him unexpectedly. “I am sorry, I was blind. What we did was wrong, but I participated in it and I cannot deny it,” the former soldier said when they met, and then added, “I owe your family three months’ rent.” Mr. Bisharat later wrote that he was inspired to match the Israeli’s humanity.

“Just that response, writ large, is what awaits Israel if it could bring itself to apologize to the Palestinians,” he wrote. In that moment he saw “an untapped reservoir of Palestinian magnanimity and good will that could transform the relations between the two peoples.”

There is a Hebrew word for the behavior of that former soldier: “teshuvah.” It is generally translated as “repentance.” Ironically enough, however, its literal definition is “return.” In Jewish tradition, return need not be physical; it can also be ethical and spiritual. That means the return of Palestinian refugees — far from necessitating Jewish exile — could be a kind of return for us as well, a return to traditions of memory and justice that the Nakba has evicted from organized Jewish life.

“The occupier and myself — both of us suffer from exile,” the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish once declared. “He is an exile in me and I am the victim of his exile.” The longer Jews deny the Nakba, the deeper our moral exile becomes. By facing it squarely and beginning a process of repair, both Jews and Palestinians, in different ways, can start to come home.

Reconciliation and Reunification: exploration of difficulties

South Africa is an excellent point of reference for us in Cyprus who struggle both for Reconciliation and Reunification of our country's two main communities.

Exploration and awareness of the difficulties involved in this, and also the path to successful solutions, are often blocked by the interests and forces of local and global State and Capital who act to bury them under political party slogans, misdirection, and political manipulation.

We are especially in tune with the saga of the South African liberation movement for many reasons. But one in particular has become even more relevant for us in the recent decade, in that the imperialist powers and our local politicians are working to impose a racist Bizonal Apartheid regime on us (a new version of the Annan plan), just like the one that tormented South Africa until 17 years ago. Same as the apartheid regime that continues to torment the people of Palestine who live under zionist Israeli domination.

The process of Reconciliation and Reunification is very difficult, both before and after any solution - even if the solution is functional.

In South Africa, as the article below shows, even after a formal dissolution of the regime problems remain because unofficial Apartheid and the objective domination of one race over another never ended, and this generates racial hatred that is a bitter part of the social justice movement.

In Cyprus we are in an even worse position
: because we have not even managed to get the occupation army to allow our people to Reunite and attempt to live together again in the same neighborhoods, workplaces and schools, as we used to in the past.

Reunification is the direction in which every person with a conscience wants us to move in. But the obstacles are tremendous. Military, economic and political obstacles are of course the most difficult, and any effort to examine the effect of social consciousness, psychology, feelings, etc. must take a secondary place.

Nevertheless, emotional and psychological factors are generated by the military, economic and political obstacles, which then take a life of their own.

Occupation, genocide and social injustice breed hatred
. Hatred fuels the liberation struggle but it also makes Reconciliation and Reunification more difficult. It's a terrible cycle but it's a part of the truth, and we need to find ways to deal with it.

At the same time we need to recognize that hatred will only be gone when both the formal and the informal (de facto) structures of domination, occupation, ethnic cleansing and genocide are removed.

If our two communities succeed in removing them together, by joined action, then the dissipation of hatred will occur at the quickest rate possible, and it will gone forever. I look forward to that beautiful day.

SAfrica rules against youth leader for hate speech
http://news.yahoo.com/safrica-rules-against-youth-leader-hate-speech-094521756.html
By DONNA BRYSON - Associated Press, Sep. 12 2011

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — The black man who leads the youth wing of South Africa's governing party has no right to sing a song some whites find offensive, a judge said Monday. Judge Collin Lamont went further than AfriForum, the white rights group that brought the hate speech suit, had demanded by saying that all South Africans, not only Julius Malema, should refrain from singing "Shoot the Boer."

Under the ruling, criminal cases can now be brought against those who sing the song or quote its lyrics. In a ruling broadcast live on national television, the judge said that while such anthems had their place during apartheid, they constitute hate speech in a society now struggling to redefine relations between the races.

Monday's ruling comes four months after hearings in Malema's hate speech trial that were broadcast live on national television. The court case is separate from Malema's ongoing African National Congress disciplinary hearings, which also have drawn wide attention.

While Monday's judgment could be seen as a setback for the embattled Malema, the lightning-rod figure might use it to rally support from South Africans who see "Shoot the Boer" as part of the heritage of the anti-apartheid movement. "Boer" means farmer in the language of South Africa's Dutch descendants known as Afrikaners, and is broadly used to refer to whites in general and Afrikaners in particular.

In a statement, the ANC said it was "appalled" by the decision, but would respect it while deciding what steps to take next. Malema, who was not in court Monday but testified at length during hearings earlier this year, had argued the song was not a literal threat against whites.

Malema and the ANC said it was a symbolic call to fight oppression, both under apartheid and 17 years after the end of white rule in a society where the black majority largely remains poor. After the ruling, crowds outside the downtown Johannesburg courtroom sang the song in defiance of the judge.

ANC Youth League leaders urged them to respect the ruling while they consulted with their lawyers about whether to appeal or take other steps. Malema, 30, has forced South Africa to confront its racial divide, insisted on trying to set his party's political and economic agenda, and claimed to represent the country's restive, poor, black majority.

The disciplinary hearings, which could lead to Malema's suspension or expulsion from the party, focus on accusations he is undermining President Jacob Zuma.

The ANC leaders who make government policy have consistently — and at times mockingly — rejected Malema's calls to nationalize mining or confiscate property from whites to hand over to blacks.

But he cannot be ignored. The vehemence and volume of his rhetoric could, over time, be influential. And his Youth League's reputation for getting voters to the polls means it has influence when the party draws up candidate lists.

Malema took credit for putting Zuma at the top of the ANC list in 2009, though he now accuses the president of being too moderate. The next election is in 2014, but the ANC could replace Zuma before that in a process akin to a vote of confidence within the party.

Malema was raised by a single mother who worked as a maid in one of South Africa's most impoverished regions. He shares those biographical details with Zuma, and they explain some of his appeal among poorer South Africans. His appeal has not been undermined by his recent acquisitions of expensive cars, flamboyant friends and a home in one of Johannesburg's most expensive neighborhoods.

Critics question whether he's sold political favors to get his wealth, charges he denies even as police and an anti-corruption office investigate. Critics also say he sets an example that feeds materialistic aspirations among young South Africans that their elders fear have crowded out the previous generation's goals of replacing apartheid with a just and humane society.

In the hate speech case, AfriForum chief executive Kallie Kriel said at court Monday his group respected the heritage of the anti-apartheid movement, but agreed with Lamont that South Africa now should move on.

"We need to find mutual recognition and respect among communities," he said, calling the ruling a victory over Malema's vision of South Africa. Leslie Mkhabela, Malema's lawyer, said he did not believe courts were the right forum to debate such social issues.

The judge had made a point similar to Mkhabela's during the trial, urging the parties to find a mediated settlement. Monday, he said he hoped the attention the trial had drawn, and his decision to allow much of it to be broadcast, would help South Africans heal by learning about each other after decades of being separated by the violence and injustice of apartheid.

Lamont spoke for nearly two hours before delivering his ruling, touching on South Africa's colonial history, the struggle against apartheid and the media attention and public outrage Malema had drawn with his insistence on singing such lyrics as "shoot the boer, they are rapists, robbers."

Lamont also spoke of the limitations of the law, acknowledging that while he could issue an order banning a song, many South Africans "are passionate about the right to sing the song." He urged South Africans to "pursue new ideals and find a new morality. They must develop new customs and rejoice in developing society by giving up old practices which are hurtful to members who live in that society with them."

16 Dead, Hundreds Injured

A global demonstration for Palestine put down by force of arms

The demonstration in Cyprus

Israeli forces opened fire on unarmed refugees and international solidarity demonstrators killing 16 people and injuring hundreds all along occupied Palestine's borders and inside the occupied areas.

Corporate and State media are under-publishing the massacres in an effort to protect the image of Zionist apartheid. But information is getting through.

Thousands of people amassed along the artificial and illegally imposed borders with Syria, Lebanon and Gaza, where Israeli forces fired upon them with live ammunition - please see this short video by the Russia Today agency:
Video of Golan Heights, West Bank clashes as Israeli forces repel protesters
"Israeli troops clashed with Arab protesters along three hostile borders on Sunday, leaving as many as 16 people dead and dozens wounded in an unprecedented wave of violence marking the anniversary of the mass displacement of Palestinians surrounding Israel's establishment in 1948."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgnMczQAIGs

Co-ordinated protests took place everywhere on earth where Palestinians or supporters of Palestine live.

The events are part of the annual commemoration of the Palestinian Nakbah (catastrophe, genocide) which this year has taken on a new character: in the spirit of self-organization and self-mobilization, the Palestinian people have declared that this year's Nakbah date will be the initiation of a Third Intifada (peoples' insurrection). The popular initiative has, as usual, has left behind the "leaders" of the various parties and factions; the people moved forward on their own, and the leaders are running to catch up.

As the Arab Revolution spreads from Tunisia and Palestine now to Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Yemen, we are pleased to publish an article by Mazin Qumsiyeh, PhD, a Palestinian human rights activist who has spent a large part of his life in the struggle for the liberation of his homeland, writing about the developments in Egypt and the rest of the Arab world with a wider view: something beyond the necessary street battles, fires and turmoil. Something about how a deeper Revolution will take seed in society and grow to be a fully living healthy organism.

And a tribute to Arab civil rights activists and freedom fighters - in the form of a song video. Please see and hear a rendition of the Arab Freedom Anthem with the lyrics (translated in english) displayed by Arab American Stephan Said sending this out to the world... from the rooftops.

Transformation in the Arab World

by Mazin Qumsiyeh, PhD mazin@qumsiyeh.org

"Mubarak has been an ally of ours in a number of things and he's been very responsible on, relative to geopolitical interest in the region, the Middle East peace efforts; the actions Egypt has taken relative to normalizing relationship with Israel.. I would not refer to him as a dictator".
- US Vice President Joe Biden (a lackey of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee [AIPAC], America's pro-Israel lobby.)
I first visited Egypt 30 years ago in 1981 to do research for my master's thesis which was later published in my first book "The Bats of Egypt". I visited Egypt twice since then and I recall vividly police abuse of their own people and yet the Egyptians I encountered mocked and joked about dictatorship. We tried at least from a distance to support our Egyptian brothers and sisters as they struggle for freedom. Arabs everywhere (yes even here in occupied Palestine) are talking about a transformation and about revolution. But all such transformations carry pain. Over 200 Egyptians were killed, thousands injured, and there is much destruction. Yet in a nation of 85 million people this is still a relatively peaceful transformation. While dealing with the present is critical we must also at this juncture start to look post dictatorship in the Arab world and plan the future.

I recall vividly a talk by a self-described "Liberal Zionist" (an oxymoron) at Duke University on 1 March 198l; at 77 year old he had no inhibitions in saying "Zionists do not want democracy in the Arab world." He explained that if Egypt was a democracy, it would not have signed a peace deal with Israel since the sentiments of the Arab people does not accept such arrangements that could be done with someone like President Sadat or King Hussein. On this point he was absolutely correct but in the long run such short-sighted perspective is self-destructive (1).

As I watched last night Hosni Mubarak make his (hopefully last) speech, I was very much reminded of the last speech of the Shah of Iran, Marcos of the Philippines, Bin Ali of Tunisia. They all claimed after so many years of torturing their own people that they now want to "reform". The US funded and supported the brutal Mubarak regime for over 30 years even as plenty of evidence from human rights organizations documented its abuse of its own citizens. See example videos of torture by Egyptian police (2). This is also the same police who, on the instruction of the Mubarak dictatorship, beat international activists trying to provide humanitarian relief to besieged Gaza (3). Mubarak then went on to for the first time appoint a vice president (his intelligence chief and ex-army buddy Omar Suleiman) and appoint another army officer as prime minister. It is now recognized that his reign is ending and a new era is beginning.

It is rather amusing that the brutal dictator of "Saudi" Arabia (a country named after a ruling family!) called to support Mubarak and stated that the demonstrators are hooligans and criminals. Anyone who knows anything about Egypt knows that this amazing and inspiring mostly nonviolent revolution is a true expression of the will of the Egyptian people regardless of their political or religious persuasions (leftist, Muslim Brotherhood, Nasserite Arab Nationalist, Christians, Muslims, etc).

In other news in brief for those who don't keep up with internet news or those who watch mainly the (supine) Western Media:
-Large demonstrations by Egyptians and human rights defenders at Egyptian embassies around the world all demanding democracy

-Israeli embassy in Cairo essentially emptied (an apartheid state embassy in the largest Arab country is an abomination)

-Israeli pundits very worried about how Egypt might look after Mubarak.

-There are many signs that the Egyptian military (like the Tunisian military) may be critical in this struggle. Already there are instances where the demonstrators were protected from the Egyptian police by the Egyptian military. See footage (4)

-A number of human rights groups and Egyptian community representatives abroad all called for ending the Egyptian police brutality. By contrast EU and US government officials are making feeble statements to hedge their bets and at best call for "peaceful" actions from "all sides". Slowly they were forced to modify their retorhic to talk about "change" but must finally call on their puppet Mubarak to leave power and insist that he and his sons and family return the billions stolen from the Egyptian people.

-A number of religious and civil organizations in Egypt broke their silence to support the ouster of the "last Pharaoh"

-The dictatorship cutting of web and mobile phone services and banning reporting by groups like Al-Jazeera did little to stem the tide of protest because people are living it daily in their homes and on the streets and they are not being incited from outside.

-Protests spread to Jordan and Yemen (two other Western supported governments). There are now plans for large protests in Syria and other countries.

-On the Palestinian Authority TV news, they noted that Mahmoud Abbas called Mubarak and stated his support for stability of Egypt. Other news outlets stated that he fully supports the Mubarak regime. Hamas then came in to say that they support the Egyptian people. Sadly, I think all rational human beings know which horse to bet on in this struggle between people and a western-supported dictator who accomplished nothing for his people and instead enriched his family (his sons are billionaires in a country in which tens of millions of people live on less than $1 a day).
I wrote seven months ago that "The political leadership in the fragmented Arab countries and Palestinian authority have convinced themselves that they have no option but to endlessly try to talk to politicians from Tel Aviv and Washington (the latter also Israeli occupied territory) hoping for some 'gestures'..I know most politicians like to feel 100% safe (mostly for their position of power) and are afraid of any change. But I wish they would realize that daring politicians make the history books and those who hang around trying to protect their seats will be forgotten. Cowardice is never a virtue." And then I concluded that "In the demonstrations yesterday, a child in Gaza was carrying a sign that says 'we demand freedom' and a child in Cairo that says 'children in Egypt and in Gaza want the siege lifted'. That is our future - not elderly politicians meeting to do media damage control with empty words. "(5)

But make no mistake about it: no power transformation happens without a period of unrest, instability, and pain. I believe in these difficult periods, humans are tested. Some are weak and may even try to use the situations to make some quick personal profit. Others are of strong and decent character and this shows in their watching for their neighbors and their community. I have seen countless pictures and heard countless stories of acts that can only be described as heroic (e.g. people protecting the national museum in Cairo or their neighbors' houses). Intellectuals are stepping forward to articulate rational scenarios for the future. People helping other people. So I think we will weather the transition. As to what the future holds. Clearly, the era of ignoring the masses is gone. It will not be easy since we have a legacy of decades of poor education (one that does not emphasize civic and individual responsibility etc). Getting rid of dictators is not enough. Building a civic participatory society is not easy (Europe's enlightenment did not come just from removing a few dictators).

People's expectation raised for change will dash against the reality that it will take decades to create systems of governance, accountability, economic justice, etc to allow for unleashing the great potential in the Arab world. And there is great potential (natural resources, water, educated hard-working middle class etc). It is critical that people begin to chart this future honestly and pragmatically. Slogans will not work. We the people must take responsibility for our own lives and for our communities. We need to take time to educate children in a very, very different way than we were educated. The beginnings may be simple. For example, in many Arab countries, people were thinking that as long as the country is not theirs (ruled by dictators), they can only watch over their own personal space and literally dump trash in the public space. In the new era, they have to learn that public space is theirs too. Order and respect for fellow citizens and for the country will have to be taught very early to our children. This is but one example for laying a brick in the road to real freedom and real prosperity. The bricks though are many and they will have to be fashioned and laid by the people. It is very hard work but it is the only way forward.
