The haul was discovered after gendarmerie forces received a tip in the eastern province of Van. Gendarmerie raided the field which was owned by 41 villagers and found nearly 2 billion stalks and roots of cannabis planted in the field.

The plants have an estimated street value of 30 billion Turkish liras ($20 billion USD), officials said.

It took nearly four days for soldiers to burn the cannabis, gendarmerie officials said.

Meanwhile, gendarmerie teams launched another operation in the area and found two tons of hashish near the field.
